ISO Rating : Idaho Surveying and Rating Bureau

ISO, or the Insurance Services Office, evaluates and rates the firefighting capabilities of communities across the United States, focusing primarily on structural firefighting. It’s important to note that their ratings do not assess wildland or urban interface capabilities. The ratings range from 1 to 10, with the lower the number the better, as a rating of 1 represents the best possible score.

These ratings significantly impact homeowners' insurance premiums—higher ratings typically lead to lower costs due to perceived reduced risk. However, just because ISO rates our community does not mean that an insurance company is obligated to use that rating; many insurance companies conduct their own evaluations.

The ISRB, or the ISO's Fire Suppression Rating Schedule, specifically assesses factors such as water supply, fire department capabilities, and emergency communications. A strong ISO rating indicates a well-prepared fire service, reassuring residents and businesses about their safety.

A recent achievement in our community saw an upgrade from a rural rating of 8 to 3W, demonstrating enhanced fire protection in areas with water supply. This advancement reflects our commitment to safety and can help lower insurance costs for residents.

Our ISO / Protection Class Rating:

Protection Class 3

A protection class 3 rating is a solid achievement, indicating that your local fire department and emergency services are well-prepared to safeguard your neighborhood. This rating reflects efficient response times, well-maintained equipment, and adequate water supply, all of which contribute to a safer environment for you and your neighbors. It’s a testament to the dedication and teamwork of your local firefighters, ensuring that they are ready to protect and serve whenever needed.

Rural Rating for areas with a water supply: 3W (Must have a reliable source of water such as an in ground water tank).

How to calculate your ISO / Protection Class Rating?

If your property is:

Within 1000 feet of a city fire hydrant = PC 3

Within 1000 feet of a 30,000-gallon draft site = PC 3W

Greater than 1000 ft from a water supply but within 5 miles of the station = PC 8

Between 5 and 10 miles of the fire station = PC 9

Greater than 10 miles = PC 10
